Brent Cross flyover is down to one lane each way. Hendon Way shuts overnight on 1, 2, 5 and 6 October, and the A406 under the interchange on 13 to 15 October.
Brent Cross is the one to plan around, and it will be for weeks. Transport for London started rebuilding the A41 Brent Cross flyover last night. From today the flyover and its approaches are down to one lane in each direction, and TfL says the job runs for up to two years.
Four overnight closures of the A41 Hendon Way come first, tonight, Friday, Monday and Tuesday. Then the North Circular shuts in both directions beneath the interchange for three nights from 13 October.
Elsewhere, the M1 northbound closes again from Staples Corner tonight and on Friday night. Across the borough, a dozen short council closures land next week.
This page is rewritten each time we check the sources. Everything below was verified on 1 October 2026 against TfL’s own travel advice and live feed, Barnet Council’s statutory traffic orders, National Highways’ closure report and National Rail.
Brent Cross flyover: the dates
TfL’s travel advice for the works sets out three stages of lane restrictions:
| Dates | What changes |
|---|---|
| 1 to 28 October | A41 Hendon Way lane restrictions. The flyover and its approaches are one lane each way |
| 1 October to 13 November | One lane of the westbound A406 shut between Brent Street and the Brent Cross Interchange exit slip |
| From 29 October | A contraflow on the flyover, still one lane each way |
And these full overnight closures, each from 10pm to 5am:
| Night | Closed |
|---|---|
| Thursday 1 and Friday 2 October | A41 Hendon Way southbound, Vivian Avenue junction to The Vale junction |
| Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 October | A41 Hendon Way northbound, The Vale junction to Vivian Avenue junction |
| Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 October | A406 North Circular, both directions, beneath Brent Cross Interchange, for concrete repairs |
| Thursday 12 and Friday 13 November | A406 westbound, between the interchange exit and entry slips. Traffic goes up and over the interchange |
On the Hendon Way nights, TfL is diverting bus routes 102, 113, 143, 186, 226, 324, 326, 643 and N113, and some stops on or near Hendon Way will not be served. TfL says there will be signed diversions for every closure, and that it may add more overnight closures. It will pause the works from late November to early January, to keep the shopping centre open through Christmas.
The first closure has already happened. TfL’s live feed showed the westbound A406 shut at the Brent Cross roundabout from 10pm last night to 5am this morning (TfL traffic status).
The job is to strengthen the flyover, replace its safety barriers and waterproof it, so that the 7.5-tonne weight restriction in place since October 2022 can come off at the end. The Department for Transport has put in £10.8 million (TfL project page). The Tube and trains are not affected, TfL says, and it suggests using them for Brent Cross, Hendon, Golders Green, Colindale and Cricklewood. The Brent Cross footbridge is closed for repairs. We set out the full story in our report on the flyover works.
The other red-route works
TfL’s feed listed these in Barnet when we checked in the early hours of 1 October. All are lane closures or signals, not full closures.
- A1 Lyttelton Road, N2 (westbound) at Gurney Drive: lane one closed for emergency Cadent gas works, listed to 5 October.
- A1 Great North Way (westbound) between Parson Street and Tenterden Drive: lane one of three closed for electrical works, listed to 12 October.
- A1 Watford Way (southbound) at Tithe Close, Mill Hill: lane one closed for UK Power Networks works, listed to 13 October.
- A5 Burnt Oak Broadway (southbound) at Fortune Avenue: three-way temporary signals for Cadent gas works, listed to 7 October.
- A1000 High Road, East Finchley, at Fortis Green: lane restrictions for Affinity Water, listed to end at 8am today.
Put the A1 jobs together with Brent Cross and the whole Hendon side of the borough is narrower than usual for the next fortnight.
What is restricted right now on council roads
- Sussex Ring and Lullington Garth, Woodside Park (N12): to 12 October. The phased resurfacing is in its last stretch, 9am to 6pm. Cisbury Ring North and Cisbury Ring South close at their Lullington Garth ends from 2 October, and Rodmell Slope and Offham Slope from 9 October, all to 12 October. The signed diversion is Frith Lane, Dollis Road, Nether Street, Ballards Lane and Alexander Grove (the made order).
- Meadow Gardens, Edgware (HA8): no waiting or loading to 11 October. “At any time” restrictions on both sides from the Farm Road junction for gas mains replacement, 21 days from 21 September (the notice).
- Limes Avenue, Golders Green (NW11): one way until 31 October. No left turn in from northbound Golders Green Road, no right turn in from southbound, and residents get in via The Drive (the made order).
- Diploma Avenue, East Finchley (N2): footpath closed to 30 October, between Diploma Avenue and the High Road car park, for resurfacing (the made order).
- Meadway, Hampstead Garden Suburb (NW11): no parking until about 30 November, between Heathgate and Bigwood Road, while a burst water main is repaired. The road looks open, which is why this one catches people out (the order).
- Barnfield Road, Burnt Oak (HA8): one-way system suspended for 474 days from 31 August, for the step-free upgrade at Burnt Oak station (the made order; our report).
- Deansbrook Road, Edgware (HA8): south-eastern footpath closed between Deansbrook Road and Barnfield Road, estimated to 27 November 2027 (the order).
- Moxon Street, Victors Way and Whitings Road, High Barnet (EN5): parking changed for about 16 months. Moxon Street lost its paid bays beside 98 High Street and its loading bay; Victors Way gained six Zone C resident bays; Whitings Road lost shared and resident bays opposite and outside Nos. 37 to 47 (Moxon Street, Victors Way, Whitings Road).
- Avondale Avenue, New Barnet (EN5): no parking today, and again on 13 October. The council has now made the order for “at any time” waiting and loading restrictions on both sides between Church Hill Road and Derwent Avenue, for sewer rehabilitation, one day in each phase. The alternative route is Connaught Avenue and Derwent Avenue (the made order).
Next week: the short closures
The council published a batch of notices on 24 September. Most are intentions to make an order, so treat the dates as the plan rather than a certainty.

A new School Street in Whetstone from Monday
Barnet made an experimental order on 24 September creating a School Street around Queenswell Infant, Nursery and Junior Schools in N20. From Monday 5 October, motor vehicles without a permit cannot enter these roads from 8.30am to 9.15am and 3pm to 3.45pm, Monday to Friday:
- Orchard Avenue, the whole length
- Queens Avenue, the whole length
- Greenside Close, the whole length
- Sweets Way, from Lovegrove Way to the junior school entrance
Residents and people working at premises inside the zone can apply for a permit. Because the order is experimental, objections can be sent within six months of it starting, to highwayscorrespondence@barnet.gov.uk quoting TMO 2026_60 (the made order).
Later in October
- Friern Watch Avenue, North Finchley (N12), from Monday 12 October, 19 days. Closed from the High Road to outside No.2 while a crane removes cladding from 886 to 902 High Road. Northbound traffic diverts via the High Road, Mayfield Avenue and Friary Road (the made order).
- Mayfield Avenue, North Finchley (N12), from Monday 19 October, 19 days. The same job, the next side road. Southbound traffic diverts via the High Road, Friern Watch Avenue and Friary Road (the made order). The two overlap for a week, so both side roads are out of use for most of a month.
- Packhorse Lane, Ridge, from 7 October. Outside the borough: Ridge is in Hertsmere, about three miles north of High Barnet. Hertfordshire County Council intends to close 1,203 metres of the lane, from the B556 St Albans Road to Mimms Lane, to all traffic except access. The notice says there is no alternative route, and the works are scheduled to take six months (the notice).
Parking changes: one in force today, four open for comment
In force from today, 1 October: Amendment No.317 and Amendment No.214, made on 24 September. They add “at any time” yellow lines at junctions and bends including:
- Edgwarebury Lane with Parkside Drive, and Parkside Drive’s bend (HA8)
- Hale Lane near Priory Field Drive and Highview Avenue (HA8)
- Brunswick Park Gardens and Brunswick Park Road (N11)
- Oakleigh Road North near Oakleigh Park North (N20)
- Victoria Road and Mansfield Avenue, and Cat Hill (EN4)
- Childs Way (NW11), Stockton Gardens (NW7) and Albion Avenue (N10)
Several timed restrictions become “at any time” at the same time. That includes the south side of Victoria Road EN4 between Nos. 2 and 56, the north side of Union Street EN5 near the High Street, the A5 Edgware Road at The Hyde NW9, and stretches of both sides of Trevor Road HA8, which lose their permit parking. On Brim Hill N2, a stretch outside Nos. 47 and 49 becomes permit parking (the made order).
Open for comment until about 15 October (each notice gives 21 days from 24 September):
| Reference | What is proposed | Notice |
|---|---|---|
| SCR730 | Remove five on-street EV charging bays and move a sixth, three of them on Grahame Park Way NW9 | notice; our report |
| SCR734 | 23 new dedicated disabled bays across the borough, and 14 redundant ones removed | notice |
| SCR735 | Parking removed at five spots to make way for new dropped kerbs, and six bicycle hangars, including Friern Park N12, Shurland Avenue EN4 and Lancaster Gardens N2 | notice |
| SCR736 | New yellow lines at nine Long Lane N2 junctions, on Creighton Avenue N2 and around Broadhurst Avenue HA8; event-day restrictions on Page Street and Pursley Road NW7 made permanent | notice |
Comments quote the reference and go to parking.consultations@barnet.gov.uk, through Barnet TraffWeb, or to the Design Team, 2 Bristol Avenue, Colindale NW9 4EW.
Apex Corner: what we cannot stand up today
A TfL order made with Barnet Council authorised phased overnight resurfacing at Apex Corner (Northway Circus), where the A1 meets the A41, from 26 January 2026 to 25 July 2027, 10pm to 5am. Both Public Notice Portal entries for it have rolled off the site, so we could not re-check those terms against a live source today. TfL’s feed listed nothing at Apex Corner on 1 October. If a closure there affects you, check TfL’s traffic status page.
The motorways: the M1 northbound shuts again
National Highways’ closure report covers Wednesday 30 September to Tuesday 6 October.
- M1 northbound, junction 1 to junction 5: full carriageway closure tonight, Thursday 1 October, 10pm to 5.30am, and Friday 2 October, 11pm to 6am. It was also shut last night. Junction 1 is Staples Corner and junction 2 is the A1 at Mill Hill. The reason is surfacing, and the diversion is on local roads. With Hendon Way also shut southbound on those two nights, do not count on the A41 as your way round.
- A1(M) southbound, junction 4 exit slip: closed 10pm to 5.30am on Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 October for safety fence repairs.
- Nothing else in the report touches the M1 or A1(M) between London and the M25.

Trains and the Tube
The Northern line has nothing booked at Barnet stations until late October. TfL’s planned closures list, dated 28 September, then shows that trains will not stop at Burnt Oak from Monday 26 October to Sunday 8 November (TfL planned closures).
On the main lines, these are the dates in the next four weeks:
- Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October: a reduced late-evening and early-morning Thameslink service between Kentish Town or West Hampstead Thameslink and Bedford, the line through Cricklewood, Hendon and Mill Hill Broadway (the notice).
- Sunday 11 October, until 8am: a reduced Great Northern and Thameslink service between King’s Cross and Finsbury Park (the notice).
- Sunday 18 October: no trains between Finsbury Park and Moorgate. Paper tickets are accepted on the Underground (the notice).
- Monday 19 to Friday 23 October, 11.59pm to 5.10am: buses replace trains between Alexandra Palace and Stevenage via Welwyn Garden City, which covers New Southgate, Oakleigh Park, New Barnet and Hadley Wood (the notice).
- Saturday 24 to Sunday 25 October, 11.59pm to 8.10am: buses replace trains between Bedford and Luton or Mill Hill Broadway (the notice).
The notices were found through National Rail’s planned incidents sitemap.
The three trackers that stay current
Roadworks pages date fast. These do not.
- TfL traffic status: live disruption on the red routes (A1, A41, A5, A406), organised by corridor with dates and severity.
- LondonWorks: TfL’s register of every proposed and current streetwork in Greater London. Search by postcode, street or the borough of Barnet, up to three months ahead. This is the one that catches the gas board digging up your own street.
- Barnet TraffWeb: the council’s own live map of traffic orders, consultations, collision data and parking suspensions. Barely anyone knows it exists, and it is the definitive record of restrictions on council roads.
The council also publishes a street works and road closures page. For the statutory orders themselves, which carry the exact extent, hours and diversion of every closure, search Barnet on the Public Notice Portal. That is where the closures above come from.
What we could not confirm today
- barnet.gov.uk returned a bot-detection page again, so the council’s own street works listing could not be read. It is linked above unquoted, and nothing on this page rests on it.
- Apex Corner, as set out above: the order’s end date could not be re-checked against a live source.
- Most of next week’s council closures are still intentions. Only the Avondale Avenue, School Street and Amendment No.317 orders listed as made had been made when we checked. The others could move.
- TfL may add more Brent Cross closures. It says it will share dates once they are confirmed, and we will add them here.
Who runs which road, and where to report a pothole
Two authorities share Barnet’s roads, and a report to the wrong one goes nowhere. TfL manages the red routes, which it says make up 5% of London’s roads but carry up to 30% of its traffic. In Barnet that means the A1 (Watford Way and Barnet Way), the A41, the A5 and the A406. Defects on those go to TfL Streetcare or 0343 222 1234.
Everything else is Barnet Council’s, from the A1000 through Whetstone and High Barnet down to your own street. Report those through barnet.gov.uk or FixMyStreet.
The council side is mid-way through a heavy investment cycle. Barnet approved a £15.52 million highways programme for 2026/27 in December 2025, £9 million of it on roads and £3.4 million on pavements. That is part of a £97 million package announced in 2024 for its 723 km of roads and 1,290 km of pavements, and the council says it repaired nearly 4,000 potholes in 2025 (Highways News, March 2026).
Station parking, for the park-and-ride commute
Tariffs below were re-checked on 13 September 2026 and are unchanged.
- High Barnet station: 173-space surface car park run by Saba for TfL, open 24/7, cashless with ANPR. £11 a weekday, £6.30 at weekends, £54 a week, £216 a month, £648 a quarter, £2,592 a year. Motorcycles £2. Bank holidays are charged at the weekday rate. Six of the 173 spaces are blue badge bays. Blue Badge holders park free in a designated bay, but you have to register the stay at a machine on arrival, and standard rates apply if those bays are full.
- Mill Hill Broadway station: 42-space car park run by APCOA for Thameslink. £11.10 a weekday, dropping to £8.10 after 10am and £3.60 after 5pm, £4.10 at weekends. Season tickets are £45.10 a week, £169.70 a month, £444.70 a quarter and £1,455.90 a year, with a premier ticket at £1,742. Blue Badge holders park free. A 15p convenience fee applies to every tariff, and daily rates expire at 4am.
- Edgware station: no operator tariff page was published when we checked. The nearest confirmed TfL car park is Canons Park, one stop away with 161 spaces.
If you are parking on-street instead, the borough’s controlled zones and charges are covered in our parking in Barnet page, and if the roads are against you the trains usually are not.
What it means for you
If you drive through Brent Cross, allow extra time every day, not just on closure nights. The flyover is one lane each way until at least the Christmas pause. TfL expects the knock-on to reach the A406, the A5 Edgware Road and the A1. Its advice, if you do not need to stop at Brent Cross, Staples Corner or Henlys Corner, is to go another way.
Tonight and Friday are the worst nights to head south or north late. Hendon Way is shut southbound between Vivian Avenue and The Vale, and the M1 northbound is shut from Staples Corner. On Monday and Tuesday nights it is Hendon Way northbound.
If you use the North Circular late at night, it shuts in both directions under Brent Cross on 13, 14 and 15 October.
If your child goes to Queenswell in Whetstone, the School Street starts on Monday. Drop off outside the zone between 8.30am and 9.15am unless you hold a permit.
Check the parking signs if you park in EN4, EN5, HA8, N2, N10, N11, N20, NW7, NW9 or NW11. New “at any time” lines from Amendment No.317 are in force from today.
Four parking consultations close around 15 October, including the EV charging bays (SCR730) and 23 new disabled bays (SCR734).
If you use the trains, the Great Northern stations from New Southgate to Hadley Wood go onto buses overnight from 19 to 23 October. Burnt Oak’s Northern line platforms close from 26 October to 8 November.
